European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR)
11th Azores Waste Week, inserted in the 12th European Waste Prevention Week
(In)visible waste
EBS Tomás de Borba students, in partnership with the Eco-Schools Program and the Erasmus+ KA229 project “WE CAN - Climate Action Now”, participated in the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) 2020, from the 23rd to 27th November.
The students involved photographed outdoor spaces (school and surroundings) to spot waste. Two photos were taken at the same location: one with the residue and one without the reOsindluinee.
Subsequently, a video montage was made with the collection of all the photos, drawing attention to the (in)visible garbage, and published on YouTube.
This awareness campaign intended to change citizens’ behavior regarding their consumption patterns and habits. Furthermore, participants were challenged to learn more about waste reduction and raise awareness among their community about the huge amount of waste that is carelessly produced.

“Trash on the floor? No!”
One of the projects of the Cultural School Project at our school is “Trash on the floor? No!”. We believe that there is an urgent need for a change in the Global footprint of our students. We want our students to feel that the school is their home and to be aware of how much rubbish sometimes they put in the wrong place.
During the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR), teachers accompanied the students gathering the different waste in the school areas assigned to each class. At the end, all classes delivered the garbage collected near the main entrance door, in a box made of pallets “Lixo no chão? Não!”.
We weighted the garbage and were shocked with the result, counting, and measuring them. After that, they used different pieces of collected waste to make recycled art.
These actions will be carried out in the classroom context, inserted in the curriculum of the different subjects, such as arts, sciences and literature influenced by environmental problems.
The objective of these actions is to sensitize students to a cleaner Planet.
Short films about “Circular and Sustainable Textiles” were also screened.

Throughout this year, one of the projects of the School Cultural Project will be “Lixo no Chão Não”, as we find it urgent to change the Global footprint of our students.
Every day, employees collect the rubbish that students throw on the floor, so that they can play in the school spaces without mountains of rubbish. We want students to feel that the school is their home and that they have an idea of the amount of rubbish they put in the wrong place.
We want to quantify the garbage and impress them with the result, so we ask for authorization for several actions, namely the collection of garbage, sorting it, building parts with the collected garbage and painting the school's rubbish bins and ecopoints.
These actions will be carried out in the classroom context, inserted in the planning of the various disciplines.
The objective of these actions is to make students aware of a cleaner Planet.
MUTATIS MUTANDIS
Change whenever you like - An Era of Plastic
The exhibition "Mutatis Mutandis" was inaugurated today and it will remains at the hall of our school, until the 16th of December. This exhibition belongs to the Observatório do Ambiente dos Açores - Science Center of Angra do Heroísmo.
We would like to thank Flávia for her approach to the classes that were present.
The Eco-Schools program flag was also hoisted.
The «Mutatis Mutandis – The plastic age» project is an initiative of the Europe Direct Information Center in the Azores that aims to draw attention to problems related to marine pollution.
This exhibition is the result of the work carried out by children and young people and which began with awareness-raising actions on marine litter and its impact, followed by a cleaning of the coastline. The collected plastic served as raw material for the development of the works that are now presented to the public.
It was intended to reinforce the fight against marine pollution, promote blue economy initiatives and sustainable fishing, as well as to intensify the EU's efforts against climate change, in line with the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda.
More than 10 million tons of waste are thrown into the sea annually. By 2050, there could be more plastic than fish in our oceans. Actions like this are intended to contribute to reversing these predictions, by raising awareness in civil society.
